In physics, energy is the quantitative property that must be transferred to a body or physical system to perform work on the body, or to heat it. Simply put, energy is the capacity to do work.
The law of conservation of energy states that energy can be converted in form, but not created or destroyed.
So, we need energy to do work. And we transform energy as we do that work.
Most of our energy expenditure is chemical at the cellular level, and some manifests itself externally as mechanical energy (movement), sound (communication), electro-magnetic (synapse firing) and heat.
When performing work we have to overcome friction, inefficiencies and other barriers to the transformation of energy. Alignment (coherence) with purpose, strengths and values minimises these barriers in the same way as a filter allows signals to pass or not. Self-awareness is the clue to effective self-management.
Such a filter is also noticable in the interface between systems, when appropriate communication allows more effective energy transfer in the form of ideas, instruction and other communication. As the recipient of such energy, we can notice a positive or negative energetic impact – amplifying or attenuating our intrinsic energy (resonance). For maximum positive energy, we need self-awareness and an awareness of others.
The 4 Vectors of Energy
The key elements of our energy apply both to individuals and organisations:
Your raw physical energy is the energy you can bring to a task or project. This baseline is derived from your physical health and wellness.
In a system, this is the energy stored or being input that powers the functionality.
How well do you look after yourself?
Your energy focus determines how well directed that energy is. This is the mental faculty of decision making, setting goals, learning and assessing progress.
In a system, this is what manages the functionality to ensure results are delivered consistently.
How do you manage your focus?
Your coherency determines what effort you need to perform in overcoming internal tendencies. This is spiritual alignment with your purpose, values and strengths.
This works like a filter – aligned activities take less energy to perform & it’s easier to get into a flow state. Working against your values and strengths, or on activities which have no inherent purpose for you is draining.
How well do you understand and apply your values and strengths?
Do you have a well defined purpose?
Resonance enables you to turbo charge your raw energy by synchronising with other energy sources, and knowing your own psychological needs. This is your ability to apply emotional intelligence in understanding yourself, others and your relationships.
Resonant emotional energy acts as an amplifier in a system. When you are fulfilling a psychological need you perceive it as energising – this can come from your self, from others and from your environment. If all 3 are resonating, you feel on fire!
How well do you understand your own psychological needs?
As a leader, how well do you understand the needs of others?
